“Enormous fun! Touching, romantic, sexy, dazzling.”
-Clive Barnes, New York Post

"Prelude To A Kiss" was first performed in 1989 by the South Coast Repertory Theatre. From there it went on to play off-Broadway at the Circle Rep (where it won the Obie Award for Best Play), and then moved to a Broadway run at the Helen Hayes Theatre (and was nominated for a1990 Best Play Tony). Author Craig Lucas then adapted the story into a screenplay, which was made into a critically acclaimed 1992 film starring Alec Baldwin, Meg Ryan, Ned Beatty, Kathy Bates, and Stanley Tucci.

“Prelude” is a romantic fairy tale, as well as a metaphysical thriller cleverly disguised as a light comedy, which evolves into something dark and surprisingly moving. On one level the story concerns a couple who meet, fall in love, and get married. But at the wedding reception a mysterious old man asks to kiss the bride, and what began as a familiar comic romp turns into a penetrating examination of modern relationships.

Winner of the 1989 Obie Award for Best Play, “Prelude To A Kiss” is the lighthearted story of a whirlwind romance, but with a twist. Newlyweds Peter (Jason Miller) and Rita (Amy Grimm), who find their promise to love each other forever tested in ways they could never have imagined. Just moments after they exchange wedding vows, an elderly man (Robert Thomas) appears and a magical twist of fate occurs.

This highly acclaimed play transforms a classic tale into a stunning powerful evocation of sex, death and compassion in times that are far from compassionate. Ultimately, the audience is taken on a mystical ride of exchanged identities, hidden longings and the pure connection of souls.

The play also featured Mac Welch, Stacy Champagne, Nathan Boren, Krystal Iseminger, John Reel, Amber Malott, Amy Hughey, Meridith Jones, Stephen Mizak, Sarah Glenn, and Nathan Ohmie.

Theatre On Consignment’s production of “Prelude To A Kiss” ran February 13, 14, and 15 at 8pm and February 16 at 2pm in the Linesight Theatre. Jason Bailey directed and designed set and sound. Nathan Boren was lighting coordinator and Megan Upton-Tyner was costume coordinator. Amy Hughey was stage manager and light board operator; Earnest Roberson was sound board operator.
