The Penetration Play by Winter Miller, Directed by Cherice Henderson, Feb. 9-11 & 16-18. Doors open at 7:30 pm, and the show starts at 8:00.

Rain is in love with her best friend, Ash. It's possible Ash feels the same way. Except that now Ash is falling for Rich to the delight of her mother, Maggie. Over the course of an evening, all three women will experience the bittersweet consequences of desire. This verbally taut comedy brings to life that little-known adage: If at first you don't succeed... seduce your best friend's mother.

Theatre On Consignment will hold auditions for it's season opener The Penetration Play by Winter Miller on Wed., Dec.28th and Thurs., Dec.29th at 7p at First Metropolitan Community Church, 156 S. Kansas St. (one block south and east of Douglas & Hydraulic). There are roles for 2 Women in their late 20's early 30's and 1 Woman, late 40's to early 50's. Cold readings from the script will be provided. The play has adult language and themes. Description provided below. We are happy to be able to announce our 2012 Season on this fine holiday. Thanks for hanging in there with us through all of our trials and tribulations. Keep your eyes peeled for audition dates/times as each show grows closer. Our 2012 Season is as follows:

Three Tall Women by Albee, Directed by Kay Carroll, May 17-19 & 24-26

In Act One, a young lawyer, "C," has been sent to the home of a client, a ninety-two-year-old woman, "A," to sort out her finances. "A," frail, perhaps a bit senile, resists and is of no help to "C." Along with "B," the old woman's matronly paid companion/caretaker, "C" tries to convince "A" that she must concentrate on the matters at hand. In "A's" beautifully appointed bedroom, she prods, discusses and bickers with "B" and "C," her captives. "A's" long life is laid out for display, no holds barred. She cascades from regal and charming to vicious and wretched as she wonders about and remembers her life: her husband and their cold, passionless marriage; her son and their estrangement. How did she become this? Who is she? Finally, when recounting her most painful memory, she suffers a stroke. In Act Two, "A's" comatose body lies in bed as "B" and "C" observe no changes in her condition. In a startling coup-de-theatre, "A" enters, very much alive and quite lucid. The three women are now the stages of "A's" life: the imperious old woman, the regal matron and the young woman of twenty-six. Her life, memories and reminiscences—pondered in the first act—are now unceremoniously examined, questioned, accepted or not, but, at last, understood. In the end, her son arrives and kneels at her bedside, but it is too late.

The Baltimore Waltz by Paula Vogal, Directed by Leslie Seaton, Aug. 16-18 & 23-25

When Anna, an unmarried schoolteacher, is diagnosed with ATD, Acquired Toilet Disease, a fatal new malady with a high risk factor for elementary school teachers, she and her brother Carl take flight to Europe. Anna decides she wants to drown herself in the sensuality of food and sex, while Carl becomes involved in a wild Third Mannish espionage scheme to find a cure for his sister on the Continent. Something is not quite right with the scenario, and the largest hint is dropped when Anna shows slides of their trip to Europe where each frame looks exactly like Baltimore. Carl's quest for a cure dead ends with a mad Viennese quack. Their European idyll is broken by Carl's death, and the tragic revelation that the entire play was Anna's valiant fantasy to keep alive her brother's spirit when she could not save his life.

November by David Mamet, Directed by David Bailey, Oct. 4-6 & 11-13

David Mamet's Oval Office satire depicts one day in the life of a beleaguered American commander-in-chief.

It's November in a Presidential election year, and incumbent Charles Smith's chances for reelection are looking grim. Approval ratings are down, his money's running out, and nuclear war might be imminent. Though his staff has thrown in the towel and his wife has begun to prepare for her post-White House life, Chuck isn't ready to give up just yet. Amidst the biggest fight of his political career, the President has to find time to pardon a couple of turkeys — saving them from the slaughter before Thanksgiving — and this simple PR event inspires Smith to risk it all in attempt to win back public support. With Mamet's characteristic no-holds-barred style, November is a scathingly hilarious take on the state of America today and the lengths to which people will go to win.

Director Submission Guidelines

Theatre On Consignment welcomes submissions for plays for our 2010-2011 Season. Here’s our criteria:

When selecting a play:

The play should fit with TOC’s mission statement as listed on our website.
It should be able to be performed in our current space at FMCC. Please keep in mind our limited budget, cast size, and royalty requirements. Musicals are NOT our thing, so don’t even think about it.
It should be a show that you are personally passionate about.
Obviously, language is not an issue, but we don’t do nudity. If it’s there, it can be worked around, but it will not be worked in.
We prefer experienced directors only please.
We at TOC DO NOT pre-cast shows. Period.

Please send your submission to our business office at Theatre On Consignment, 709 Stackman Dr. Unit B, Wichita, KS 67203. Include the following:

Your contact information
Resume, along with a list of professional references
A brief summary of why you want to direct said show and why you think it’s great for TOC
A copy of the script*

TOC Presents "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

Theatre On Consignment will end its 2010-2011 season with Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? the masterful dark comedy by celebrated playwright Edward Albee.

The show will run May 19, 20, & 21 and 26, 27, & 28 at 8:00 pm (doors open at 7:30).

Performances are at First Metropolitan Community Church, 156 S. Kansas St. (one block south and east of Douglas & Hydraulic).

Ticket prices are $12 for general public and $10 for seniors, students, and military. For reservations, call (316) 941-9436.

Winner of the 1963 Tony Award for Best Play, it portrays husband and wife George and Martha in a searing night of dangerous fun and games with a young couple they have just met. By the evening’s end, a stunning, almost unbearable revelation provides a climax that has shocked audiences for years. Albee’s stripping away of social pretense and razor-sharp dialogue made it a ground breaking work of art. It has become a staple of contemporary American theatre.

It is for mature audiences only, with strong language and adult themes.

"Corpus Christi"

Theatre On Consignment will continue its 2010-2011 season with Corpus Christi, the controversial work by acclaimed playwright Terrence McNally. The show will run February 17, 18, & 19 and February 24, 25, & 26 at 8:00 pm.

Corpus Christi is a provocative play which re-imagines Jesus and his disciples as gay men living in modern-day Texas. Directed by Shaun-Michael Morse, the play centers around the Christ-like figure of Joshua, following him from birth, through his ministry, and to his passion and death. The cast includes Nick Probst, Addie Barnhart, Mike Bocovich, Scott Thomas, Cherice Henderson, Tyler Lessin, Nathan Boren, Tanya Anderson, Arri Simon, Viviano Legorreta, Dana Ellison, Andrew Scott Fayette, and Randy Ervin.

The play is for mature audiences, and includes some strong language and adult themes.

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
(from the preface to the book edition of the script)

I'm a playwright, not a theologian.
But it would have been just as naïve of me to think that I could write a play about a young gay man who would come to be identified as a Christ figure without stirring up a protest as it would to think I could write a play about Jesus Christ Himself in which He would come to be identified as a young gay man without a lot of noses getting bent out of joint.

I was not mistaken. The level of the dislike of gay men and the vehemence of the denial of any claim they might make for spiritual parity with their Christian “brothers” that Corpus Christi revealed was disheartening. Gay has never seemed less “good.” Once again, we had not come a long way at all, baby.

Now I’m sounding like a homosexual.

Let me try again: If a divinity does not belong to all people, if He is not created in our image as much as we are created in His, then He is less a true divinity for all men to believe in that He is a particular religion’s secular definition of what a divinity should be for the needs of its followers. Such a God is no God at all because He is exclusive to His members. He is a Roman Catholic at best and a very narrow-minded one at that.

Jesus Christ belongs to all of us because He is all of us. Unfortunately, not everyone believes that.

Very few Christians are willing to consider that their Lord and Savior was a real man with real appetites, especially sexual ones. To imagine that He was not only sexual active but a homosexual as well is gross blasphemy. And they would deny other the right to conceive of Him as such. They do not understand that a good part of our humanity is expressed through our sexuality and is not exclusive of it. Such a concept is as alien to them as their notion of “sin” and “evil” is to me.

In their self defense, they tell us they hate the sin but love the sinner. Nonsense. The sinner is his sin and in their eyes it is an abominable one. Naturally, they tried to suppress Corpus Christi with threats of violence. Just as naturally, the New York theatre community said no the this attempt at artistic repression and the play went on as scheduled. I have never been prouder to the a part of that community. I owe them—we owe them—big for this one.

However, at the same time that we were all feeling so good about overcoming these forces of ignorance and prejudice, a young man in Laramie, Wyoming, by the name of Matthew Shepard was losing his life to them. Beaten senseless and tied to a split- rail fence in near-zero weather, arms akimbo in a grotesque crucifixion, he died as agonizing a death as Golgotha some 1,998 years earlier. They died, as they lived, as brothers. Jesus Christ did not die in vain because His disciples lived to spread His story. It is this generation’s duty to make certain Matthew Shepard did not die in vain either. We forget his story at the peril of our very lives.

Maybe I should say a few words as a playwright.

The production the play received at the Manhattan Theatre Club will remain, I suspect, the definitive one. Joe Mantello is a theatre poet. The appellation “director” seems too circumscribed to describe what he brings to a production. His vision for the play was met on its own high terms by the extraordinary design team and cast he assembled prior to the first day of rehearsal. Our collaboration began with Love! Valour! Compassion! I can only think the best is yet to come.

Corpus Christi is a passion play. The life of Joshua, a young man from south Texas, is told in the theatrical tradition of medieval morality plays. Men play all the roles. There is no suspense. There is no scenery. The purpose of the play is that we begin again the familiar dialogue with ourselves: Do I love my neighbor? Am I contributing good to the society in which I operate or nil? Do I, in fact, matter? Nothing more, nothing less. The play is more a religious ritual than a play. A play teaches us new insight into the human condition. A ritual is an action we perform over and over because we have to. Otherwise, we are in danger of forgetting the meaning of that ritual, in this case that we must love one another or die. Christ died for all of our sins because He loved each and every one of us. When we do not remember His great sacrifice, we condemn ourselves to repeating its terrible consequences.

All Corpus Christi asks of you is to “look what they did to Him. Look what they did to Him.” At the same time it asks you to look at what they did one cold October night to a young man in Wyoming as well. Jesus Christ died again when Matthew Shepard did.

Look. Remember. Weep, if you will, but learn. And don’t let it happen again.

This time, I hope, I’m sounding like a human being.

"My First Time"

Theatre On Consignment kicked off its 2010-2011 season with My First Time, the hilarious play by Ken Davenport and real people just like you. The show ran October 14, 15, & 16 and 21, 22, & 23 at 8:00 pm.

My First Time is a play all about first sexual experiences. Based on true stories submitted to the website www.MyFirstTime.com, this play will have you laughing and reminiscing about your own first time . . . and thinking about your next one.

About the Actors

Holly (Morton) Yip (Woman #1) was last seen as “Rosalind” in Moon Over Buffalo at Wichita Community Theatre. She made her TOC debut as “Alice” in Closer, then willingly came back for more, appearing in The Vagina Monologues. A graduate of Wichita State University and an insurance agent by profession, she is thankful TOC provides her with such an enjoyable creative outlet.

Kyler Chase (Man #1): This is Kyler's first show with Theatre on Consignment. A graduate of Southwestern College, he has a musical theatre background, and is so excited for the chance to work blue.

Tanya Anderson (Woman #2): New to Wichita, I just moved from Sioux City, IA where I worked with Shot in the Dark Productions doing "modern theater for modern people". I have found that I love new & edgy theater - things you've never seen before, & things that probably catch you a little off guard. Therefore, upon moving here, I was very excited to have found TOC - a chance to continue my experience with new, modern theater. Some of my previous work includes The Vagina Monologues and The Shape of Things (playing Evelyn) with Shot in the Dark, as well as a wide variety of shows with Morningside College in Sioux City (where I received my BA in Theater Arts). I hope everyone enjoys the show, and I'd like to send a special thank you my family, my friends back in the Sioux, as well as my "Someone Special", Jason. They're my biggest fans, & know how to keep me stepping in the direction of my dreams. <3 you!

Viviano Legorreta (Man #2) lost his TOC virginity to the 2009 production Dating Games. He was most recently seen at this season's Kechi Playhouse production An Improbable Pride and Prejudice. Past favorites include roles in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Last Sunday in June, The Lark and Tuna Christmas. Thank you to Cherice for all you've taught me, this cast/crew for helping me learn, and to gin for helping me forget everything in between. This is for my friends who I love like family and all my family that I love like friends. Thank you for supporting live theater!

About the Crew

Cherice Henderson (Director) is the current Executive Director for Theatre on Consignment. She has worked with many theatres, including WCFTA, WCT, WSU Opera Dept., and Oklahoma Rep. Theatre. Cherice directed our acclaimed production of Keely and Du. She is trained in performance as well as technical theatre. She has dabbled in motion pictures and television but theatre is her passion. Cherice is a past Mary Jane Teall honoree. She thanks her friends, who have become her family for their love and support.

Rebekah Rine (Producer) began her relationship with TOC as a fan. She then tried her hand at props design forHurlyburly, Keely and Du, The House of Yes, and loads more. This led to an invitation to the TOC Board of Directors, where she continued designing props and co-produced Fat Pig and Dating Games. Her acting credits include Zero Population Growth and The Vagina Monologues. Rebekah is the current President of TOC.

Clarence Nickelson (Stage Manager): This is Clarence's third show with Theatre on Consignment. He also volunteers at Wichita Community Theatre. Clarence has enjoyed his experience with TOC and would like to thank them for this opportunity, and he hopes they keep him in mind for future endeavors. He would also like to thank his friends and family for sparing him the time away. “Carpe Diem.”

Ben C. Roose (Lighting Design/Projection Design): TOC has been Ben's unofficial creative home for the last five years. He loves to go out and sow his professional oats, but like the prodigal lighting designer, he always returns to our open arms.

Mallory Rine (Sound Design): Nominated for a Mary Jane Teal award for Dating Games, Mallory previously rocked TOC with Divas for Out in the Open and busted out the big ladies for Fat Pig. When not doing sound design, she spends her time skating for the ICT Roller Girls.

After space issues which forced our hiatus, we've worked things out with First Metropolitan Community Church and we'll be doing our spankin' new season at their location. Thanks to them for hosting us once again. They are still located at 156 S. Kansas, near Douglas and Hydraulic.
